Natural remedies for everyday illnesses
One might assume that being a doctor would grant immunity to my family and me from falling ill. Regrettably, viruses, bacteria, and other sources of illness pay no heed to one’s profession. Here, I present you with my personal toolkit designed to maintain our well-being in times of sickness and health.
Natural Remedies for Coughs and Sore Throats
- Tea – Opt for teas containing ingredients like licorice and slippery elm, as they possess throat-coating properties that alleviate irritation.
- Honey – Its throat-coating abilities can ease sore throats and suppress coughs. Consume it directly from a spoon or mix it into tea.
- Echinacea – Effective in reducing the duration of cold symptoms, particularly when used within the first two days. Available in the form of tea, drops, or pills.
- Elderberry syrup – Boasts antiviral properties, making it beneficial for colds and influenza. Adhere to the recommended dosage on the package.
- Pelargonium – A plant incorporated in some natural cold and cough remedies that helps to lessen the duration and severity of colds.
For optimal results, try each of these individually and choose the one that suits you best; avoid using all three simultaneously.
Digestive Home Remedies
- Ginger – Useful for treating upset stomachs, nausea, and motion sickness. Available as medicinal tea or in the form of candied ginger for on-the-go relief.
- Probiotics – Beneficial live bacteria and yeasts that promote a healthy digestive system. Helpful for diarrhea caused by infections or antibiotic use. Found in supplements and foods such as yogurt, miso paste, kombucha, kimchi, and raw sauerkraut.
Topical Products for Soreness and Skin Irritation
- Arnica cream – Alleviates muscle aches, pains, and bruising.
- Tea tree oil – An anti-inflammatory agent useful for bacterial or fungal infections. Ideal for spot treatment of acne and athlete’s foot.
- Calendula – Soothes skin irritations, such as eczema and diaper rash.
Natural Remedies for Sleep
- Tea – Sip on chamomile tea in the evening as you wind down.
- Lavender – An aromatherapy oil renowned for its calming and relaxation effects, suitable for both young children and older adults.
Natural Remedies for Anxiety
- Dedicate five minutes each morning to slow, deep breathing. Reflect on the day ahead, express gratitude, and consider the important people in your life.
- Teach your children to use breathing exercises en route to school, preparing them for the day ahead. Inhale for four seconds and exhale for six seconds to activate the calming nervous system.
- Opt for soothing music during your commute to and from work or school.
- Allow yourself a few minutes after work to mentally transition from the office to home. Lay to rest unresolved work issues and refocus on your family.
Safety Note: Always inform your doctor about any herbal remedies or supplements you are taking. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or using prescription medications, consult your doctor before introducing herbal remedies to your regimen.
